Updated: 19 hours ago

Looking to create a personal oasis of relaxation? A custom sauna can transform your home into a spa-like retreat, offering warmth, tranquility, and a touch of luxury. Here’s a guide to building a sauna that not only heats up but also sparks joy every time you step inside.

Why Build a Custom Sauna? A custom sauna lets you tailor every detail—size, materials, design, and features—to your preferences. Whether you’re craving a cozy backyard escape or a sleek indoor unit , a sauna can be both a rewarding project and a wellness investment. Plus, it’s a chance to infuse your personality into a space that promotes relaxation and health. At SpaWorxs we listen closely to our clients needs and style, our goal is to bring their entire visions to life.

Step 1: Plan Your Sauna Vision, define what “sparks joy” for you:

  • Location: Backyard, basement nook, main room or bathroom corner? Everything is possible. Most important is choosing a location that is easily accessible so that you are inspired to use it regularly and often.

  • Size: Solo sauna or group hangout? A 4x4 ft space works for one, while 8x12 ft fits many more comfortably. Do you want to do stretching or yoga? Having benches that move create flexible floor space that can accommodate a yoga mat.

  • Type: Traditional Finnish , Infrared, or Both!

  • Budget: Depending on materials, features, size, location, and equipment; Custom Saunas typically start at 10K

  • Aesthetic: Rustic cedar, modern minimalist, or Scandinavian chic? Choosing the right materials that inspire calm and desired vibe of the space.

Step 2: Create a Plan for the space. After an onsite consultation or zoom call, Spaworxs will draft a plan of the custom sauna layout discussed. From there we bring your vision to life by now focusing on materials and overall aesthetics.

Interior Choices:

  • Wood for Walls, Ceiling :

Cedar, Canadian Hemlock, Pine, Spruce, Thermo Aspen, Alder , and Poplar

  • Heater Options:

Rock Tower, Corner Heaters, On Board Controls, Wood Burning, or Infrared Panels

  • Benches:

Tiered benches maximize space and heat levels, Independent movable lower benches for heat seekers wanting more floor space.

  • Door:

Tempered glass or wood

  • Windows

Full wall of glass to capture a view? Or do you want to create a more intimate space with wood walls.

Step 3: Choose Joyful Extras:

Make your sauna uniquely yours with touches that elevate the experience and engage all the senses

  • Lighting: Soft, dimmable LED strips for a warm glow. Amount and placement of lighting will change the overall feel of the room. Lighting that is undermounted under benching and within backrests create a softer more calming space.

  • Sound: Waterproof Bluetooth speakers for soothing playlists, meditation tracks, or your favorite podcast.

  • Scent: Add essential oil diffusers - for IR saunas. For Traditional Saunas you can add eucalyptus or lavender oil into your water bucket to pour over the hot rocks.

  • Decor: Illuminated Himalayan Salt walls features add beneficial minerals into space, but also a beautiful architectural detail.

  • Accessories: Ergonomic headrests, sauna buckets, and ladles for traditional steam.

Turkish 100% cotton towels to wrap in or to lay on when using the sauna. Wool Banya caps keep hair dryer and face cooler so that you can extend heat bathing time.
